Rasam is an integral part of South Indian cuisine. It’s a soupy dish which is extremely healthy. The perfect combination of lemon and ginger in this Rasam soothes our throat and is perfect for a bloated stomach or even if one is down with indigestion. Drink it as lemon ginger Rasam shots or have it with some steaming hot rice with a dollop of ghee it will definitely help you with a right balance of taste and health.
Ingredients
Boiled tur dal – 1 cup
Tomato – 1 no
Green chilly – 2 no’s
Grated ginger – 1 tbsp
Coriander leaves – for garnish
Water – as required
Salt – as per taste
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Cumin pepper powder – 1 tsp
Lemon juice – 2 tbsp (or even juice out of one lemon)
Ghee – 2 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Dry red chilly – 1 no
Method
1. Chop the tomato, slit the green chilly and grate the ginger and set aside. In a vessel add one cup water and then add the tomato, green chilly, grated ginger, salt, turmeric powder, pepper and cumin powder and mix well. Allow it to boil till the tomatoes are cooked well.



2. Now add the boiled tur dal. Mash the dal and dilute with little water. Mix well and allow it to boil for ten minutes. Switch off the flame.




3. In a tempering pan add ghee, mustard seeds, dry red chilly and allow the mustard seeds to splutter. Once done add it to the Rasam.



4. Allow the Rasam to cool for five minutes and then add lemon juice and garnish with coriander leaves. Serve it hot as Rasam shots or with steaming hot rice with a dollop of ghee accompanied with any Sabzi of your choice.
